Paul Krishnamurty reckons the new year might be prime time for a young upstart to take advantage of the top player's rustiness... Will it be Danny Willett? Will it?

If there is ever a time when inexperience could almost be an advantage, it would have to be the first week of the year. For while the best players can afford to put the clubs away over the Christmas period and relax with their millions, the new recruits to the main Tours should be raring to go and well-prepared.

This could be a good time then to have an interest on one of the most exciting young players around, Danny Willett, currently trading at [110.0]. We've already seen the excellent prospect Gareth Maybin so nearly make an immediate breakthrough in this series of South African events, and in the long-run Willett is projected to be even better. The 21-year-old from Sheffield has already been ranked as No.1 amateur in the world, which was quite an achievement for a teenager.

Willett has shown plenty of potential in his rare European Tour starts so far, registering four top-20s in ten events before going on to earn his card comfortably at Q-School. That form looks competitive against some pretty limited opposition this week. We should be wary of expecting consistent excellence at this early stage of Willett's career, but I reckon he'll get into contention a few times this year and is the type to keep on side while available at big prices.
