Young American is a worthwhile three figure investment at the Sony Open, argues Paul Krishnamurty.

One of the bigger-priced golf winners of 2008 was Chez Reavie in the Canadian Open, and he looks a decent value bet at [120.0] to produce another shock this week in Hawaii.

That was Reavie's first season on the PGA Tour, and if last weekend's effort at the elite Mercedes Championship was anything to go by, he looks here to stay. Despite starting with a miserable 75 on that low scoring course, Reavie fought back well for 12th place, and ranked third for greens in regulation over the four days. While that stat is always important whatever the venue, it was slightly less so at wide-open Kapalua.

In contrast, this week's alternative Hawaiian venue, Waialae, has always placed a much stronger emphasis on tee to green accuracy. If that alone isn't enough to justify a bet, 27-year-old Reavie's effort on this course last year must also bode well for his chances. Making what was his first start as a qualified PGA Tour player, the American opened up with three sub-70 rounds before a poor 75 on Sunday sent him down the field to a still respectable 32nd.

Bearing in mind how well Reavie held his bottle in Canada - he led virtually all the way with the likes of Anthony Kim breathing down his neck - I seriously doubt that victory was a fluke, and expect to see him pop up again at a big price one day. This week looks as likely as any.
