Romero is wildly inconsistent but at least that means he knows how to win as well as lose, Paul Krishnamurty outlines the case for backing the Argentinian at [120.0] this week.
Of all the players across the various Tours, I doubt there is anyone less consistent than Andres Romero. The 27-year-old Argentinian has only been playing top-level golf since the middle of 2006, yet he's won on both European and PGA Tours already. But its been the big events where he's really made his mark; in just ten appearances in either Majors or World Golf Championship strokeplay events, Romero has made the top-10 on no less than five occasions. That record is vastly superior to several players who are more experienced and usually much more prominent in the betting; Adam Scott or Luke Donald for instance.
However, while he's given backers at big prices a great run for their money on those occasions, Romero has been wildly inconsistent on a week to week basis. Two thirds of his starts on the main tours since the beginning of 2008 have resulted in finishes outside the top-30. A record which explains why he can be backed this week at [120.0], even despite finishing third last month at another sometimes Major venue, Riviera.
It's important to know when he is likely to prosper then, before taking a chance at big odds. His record in those lucrative events suggest he brings his 'A-game' to big occasions, and this week's WGC-CA Championship very much fits the bill in that respect. As one of the most powerful players around, Romero should also very much appreciate this week's layout. Once feared as the 'Blue Monster', recent renewals at Doral suggest it has lost its teeth since technology turned golf into more of a power game.
A further clue lies in his record on courses with fast greens, where his superb putting stroke can be seen to best effect. Very few courses can boast greens faster than last year's PGA venue, Oakland Hills, or Augusta, home to the Masters. Romero made the top-10 in both of those Majors. At 11.8 on the stimp-meter, this week's venue promises to present a similar test in this regard.
