Will Wattel reward Paul's faith this week?
"Romain Wattel caught many an eye during his rookie season and, after registering top-15s amongst elite company in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, looked a winner-in-waiting in this type of lower grade event."
Paul Krishnamurty assesses two players who, before failing last weekend, had previously enjoyed runs of promising form. Our man is backing them to bounce back at long odds...
Returning to a theme from previous columns, this week's market for the Hassan Trophee is packed with over-reactions. When the big guns are away, there is very little to choose between the next 100 players in the European Tour hierachy, which results in punters jumping too quickly to conclusions about the state of each player's game. Few are ultra-consistent at this level, so missing the odd cut or two is perfectly forgiveable if the player in question can boast a decent record over the longer-term.
Both picks fall into that category. Very capable players, often fancied, who missed last week's cut in Andalucia and are consequently dismissed at triple-figures. Firstly, Romain Wattel caught many an eye during his rookie season and, after registering top-15s amongst elite company in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, looked a winner-in-waiting in this type of lower grade event. One missed cut later, he's a [100.00] chance. Last year's leaderboard at the Golf du Palais Royal was packed with top-notch putters such as David Horsey, Rhys Davies and George Coetzee. That bodes well for Wattel, who ranks fourth overall and top amongst this field for total putting this year.
Secondly, Jorge Campillo is one of the more interesting Challenge Tour graduates, following on from a stellar amateur career on the US college circuit, and has already made an impact on the main tour when finishing runner-up on his penultimate start in the Avantha Masters. With such solid recent form in the bag, it is surprising to see the Spaniard trading at [220.0], doubtless as a consequence of last week's flop.
The trading advice is to lay out three units in total, before placing lay orders at [10.0] and [3.0], banking a minimum profit of seven units if any are hit.
