Sunshine Tour Scot is the three-figure value selection for Paul Krishnamurty in the final European Tour event of the year.
The best bet amongst those at triple-figure odds this week could be [120.0] chance Alan McLean in the South African Open. The 38-year-old Scot is a latecomer to the game, in his own words having 'never played properly until the age of 23'. He's spent most of his career based in South Africa on the Sunshine Tour, where the last of his two wins came in 2006 at Sun City.
Last year's leaderboard at Pearl Valley was packed with lesser-known, solid Sunshine Tour players fitting a very similar profile to McLean. Nearly all of them were at similarly big prices, under-estimated on a tough course that the stars in the field never really got to grips with. McLean himself started terribly with an 80, before fighting back well to make the top-25.
But the strongest reason to fancy McLean lies in last week's efforts at Leopard Creek. On his first start for a few months, he closed with a pair of 66s to finish in 6th place. With many top players not fully wound up during the close season, solid recent form of this sort can be a vital clue at this time of the year.
