Vijay Singh has confirmed he will not play at this week's Buick Open as he bids to recover from ankle and elbow injuries ahead of the Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Singh, who fired a closing round of 65 to finish fourth in the Travelers Championship on Sunday, has been troubled by the ankle problem since mid-March, but will now go for a scan to determine what is wrong with his elbow and will not be taking part in Michigan this weekend.

The absence of Singh, a three-time winner of the event, and world number one Tiger Woods has left Jim Furyk, who tied for second at the recent US Open, as the strong favourite to land the spoils on Sunday.

The world number three certainly has pedigree in this competition, having won it in 2003 and finishing as runner-up in 2001 and 2006, and he currently heads the market at 7.2, having been matched previously at a high of 8.6.

Scott Verplank is next best at 22 in the developing market, ahead of Sean O'Hair (25), Trevor Immelman (30), Charles Howell III (32) and Kenny Perry (34).
