Australian Rod Pampling stormed into a three-shot lead going into the final round of the Memorial tournament at Muirfield Village, Ohio.
Play was delayed for more than two hours on Saturday because of lightning in the area.
But Pampling was unaffected and moved to 15 under par for the tournament with a second straight round of 68, leaving countryman Adam Scott (72) and American Sean O'Hair (69) in his wake at the top of the leaderboard.
Stewart Cink and Will MacKenzie shared low third-round honors with 7-under-par 65s as both players vaulted from a tie of 19th place to join Aaron Baddeley in fourth on eleven under ahead of Sunday's conclusion.
The fourth round will begin at 8am (12pm GMT) in groups of three starting off at the first and tenth tees because of a dubious forecast for Sunday.
Tiger Woods had a face like thunder after he was left behind on four under with Ernie Els and Vijay Singh.
The World number one carded a third round 70, with his South African and Fijian rivals shooting 71 apiece.
Swede Frederik Jacobson proved to be the leading European, moving to 10 under with a 68, but Paul Casey remains the highest-placed Briton in a tie for 27th at only five under par.
Pampling's nine-iron approach from a fairway bunker at the last set up a birdie and produced a two-shot swing when overnight leader Scott, who carded 62 on Friday, dropped a shot.
"Finishing with four birdies on the back nine really gave me a lot of confidence for tomorrow," said Pampling.
"I guess it's just the luck of the draw. We both hit shots exactly the same off the tee (but) I had a nice flat lie in the bunker and Adam had a pretty gnarly lie (in the rough).
"Thankfully it went my way and I hit a great shot out. Adam couldn't do a lot with what he had.
"If I can get off to a nice start tomorrow, it puts more pressure on those guys, because they have to make birdies, whereas if there's a tough pin, I don't have to be as aggressive."
