Sweden's Daniel Chopra is in a group of four players on -4, along with American trio Arron Oberholser, Anthony Kim and Doug LaBelle II.
There are a further seven players sitting on -3, including Swede Jesper Parnevik and US pair Matt Kuchar and Joey Sindelar, after carding opening rounds of 68.
Last year's Open championship runner-up Chris DiMarco is among a big group of players on -2, with Spain's Sergio Garcia five shots off the pace on -1.
Vijay Singh, who was the outright favourite before the opening round, also shot a round of 70 to leave him at -1.
