Charles Howell III won his first USPGA Tour title since 2002 after a play-off success at the Nissan Open
The Presidents Cup star was in inspired form on Sunday, firing a final day six-under-par 65 to tie with Mickelson (who shot 68) on -16, three shots ahead of Ernie Els, Robert Allenby and Jim Furyk.
The 27-year-old then holed a four-foot par putt at the third extra hole to defeat Phil Mickelson and claim the $936,000 first prize.
It's only the second tournament victory for Howell, following his success in the Michelob Championship in 2002. The win though leaves him top of the FedExCup points race after a win and three top ten finishes in his five tournaments this season.
The Augusta-born star has finished runner-up on 10 occasions on Tour, with many pundits now feeling Howell could go on from strength-to-strength after this confidence boosting victory.
The world number 45 is trading at 40 to top the money list in America this season, while Howell can be backed at 9 in the market without Woods.
