Colin Montgomerie's new caddie says he will give advice when required but otherwise just let the Scot get on with negotiating the US Open course at Oakmont.

The 43-year-old parted company with Alastair McLean at the weekend, after an alarming dip in form which has seen the Ryder Cup legend drop to 39th in the world rankings, and has chosen 62-year-old Billy Goddard to carry his bag stateside.

Montgomerie looked set to claim his first major success 12 months ago at Winged Foot but blew his chances at the 72nd hole, leaving his approach short of the green and three-putting to hand the title to Geoff Ogilvy.

The fiery star is hoping to hit top form at the right time with a new bag-man by his side and Goddard, who has been caddying at Oakmont for 48 years, is happy to offer any advice required to his new employer.

"I told him if he needed another opinion, I'd be happy to help but I'm just going to do my job and keep my mouth shut," he told Five Live.

"I was supposed to work with the media this week mainly because I didn't really want to caddie. I knew that there were qualifiers and amateurs I could probably get but I just though I would pass on them.

"The caddie master called me up on Friday and he said I might have a bag you would like. He explained everything and I said I'd be glad to do that job."

Monty has built up a reputation as someone to avoid when not playing well, but Goddard is happy with their fledgling relationship.

"I've heard stories about him but all you have to do is shut your mouth and walk away,"
he added.

"I have gone with him to practice but my opinion is that he is a nice guy. There have been no problems at all.

"He has a history but all these guys are like that, a lot of them try and hold it in, others let it out. If it is my fault then I will admit it is my fault and if I get hell - I will deserve it."

Betfair customers do not fancy Montgomerie to claim the US Open on Sunday and the five-time major runner-up can be backed at 150 to win in Pennsylvania, with world number one Tiger Woods trading as the 4.7 favourite and Phil Mickelson, despite a recent wrist injury, available at 14.5.

Jim Furyk trades at 17 while Vijay Singh can be backed at 23, with talented Aussie youngster Adam Scott on offer at 27.
