Sweden's Freddie Jacobson and Australian Adam Scott hold the joint lead after the first round of the St Jude Championship in Memphis.
Both players shot opening rounds of 67 to leave them on -3, one shot ahead of two other players, South Africa's Retif Goosen and American Brian Gay.
A group of three players are a further shot back at -1, Scott Verplank, Duffy Waldorf and Australia's Gavin Coles.
A number of experienced stars are in a big group on level par after shooting 70s on Thursday, including David Toms, Justin Leonard, Robert Allenby and John Daly.
The TPC Southwind course was rated the second toughest, behind Winged Foot, on the PGA Tour last year and the players found it hard going on the opening day.
Scott admitted: "The greens are tricky, not very big, and the pins were in quite difficult positions. So add the wind into that, you've got a tough day."
The world number four is the 4.2 favourite to claim the title this week, with double US Open winner Goosen next best at 7.
Jacobson is on offer at 11 to win his first tournament since 2003, while course designer Toms can be backed at 16.5.
