Tim Clark carded a second-round 64 to lead the Crowne Plaza Invitational field by one shot on 11-under par but 28 players have yet to complete their second rounds.
The first day's play was cut short due to heavy rain, with the players making up time on day two before bad light ended the day prematurely in Texas.
The South African completed his opening round on Friday and then hit six birdies en route to a bogey-free second round and he leads American Arron Oberholser (7 to claim the title) by a single shot.
The 31-year-old, who trades at 6.6 to win the tournament, felt his touch on the greens helped propel him to the top of the leaderboard and is determined to enjoy his unexpected success.
"I have hit a lot of fairways and greens, but I have made a lot of putts these first two rounds, which always helps," he said. "I certainly wasn't expecting it, and I am just trying to have fun."
Clarke had to play 27 holes on Friday and admitted that he built up a head of steam with Friday's overtime.
"The adrenaline was going at the end, and I almost had to calm myself down a bit," he added. "It was nice to play 27."
Jim Furyk, who is Betfair's 4.4 favourite to take the title, is tied with Australian Nathan Green (19.3) and American Ben Curtis (19) for third at nine-under par.
