Aussie jockey Hugh Bowman knows all too well the strength of Bentley Biscuit, a proposed runner from Down Under in both the King's Stand Stakes (June 19) and the Golden Jubilee Stakes (June 23) at Royal Ascot.
Bowman has ridden 20 since coming to Britain on a temporary contract to ride for Mick Channon this spring and has arguably made a bigger impression than compatriot Kerrin McEvoy did in his first year in England.
Bowman's main employer in Australia is Gai Waterhouse and he rode her Bentley Biscuit to win the Group 3 Shorts Stakes at Randwick last October, but since coming over here the Australian has lost the ride on the six-year-old gelding to Nash Rawiller, who has made the most of his the opportunities to pick up a trio of Group 1 successes.
Bentley Biscuit is based with James Fanshawe at Newmarket and is currently 8.8 in the Betfair ante-post market for the Golden Jubilee, ahead of last year's King's Stand winner Takeover Target (11.5) whom he beat by a short neck when they met recently in Australia.
Waterhouse intends to run Bentley Biscuit in both Ascot sprints though she feels he has a better chance in the King's Stand Stakes over the minimum 5f on the Tuesday.
