Frenchman's maiden win matched at triple figures
On a weekend when the lesser names of the European Tour took centre stage it was appropriately enough one of the mid-rankers who lifted the Mallorca Open on Sunday night.
Up-and-coming French player Gregory Bourdy was the man holding the biggest cheque after the dust settled following a closing day 67 which left him two shots clear of the field.
As one of the less fancied men in the field, Bourdy was available at a big price with one punter getting odds of 220 on a win for the 25-year-old.
The Mallorca Open offered players languishing in the lower reaches of the Order of Merit their last chance to guarantee a spot with the big boys next season. Some, of course, failed but a few rose to the occasion and even challenged for the win.
England's Sam Little somehow summoned up a huge performance to finish second - the 32-year-old needed a strong finish to ensure he retained his card for 2008. LIttle was matched at 4 to win.
Sergio Garcia was the star in the field but the despite being back on home turf, the Spaniard could not get his game going and finished 18th. Punters were still convinced though and he was backed at a low of 3.8 after the first day.
