Geordies suffer final indignity of a bad season and the Premier League suffers probably its biggest relegation yet...

Sunday May 24 will go down as a dark day for North East football with Newcastle and Middlesbrough both relegated from the Premier League. Hull and Sunderland survived.

Newcastle traded at a high of [38.0] in Betfair's relegation market while Boro were backed at a high of [20.0]. The pair started the day at [1.6] and [1.04] respectively.

During the season, Hull traded as low as [1.3] to go down but, thanks to Newcastle's defeat at Aston Villa, just had enough to stay up despite losing to Manchester United. Sunderland, backed at [3.1] for relegation, lost to Chelsea but survived.

Fielding an inexperienced team, Manchester United drifted to [3.35] in the match odds but encountered few problems getting past City, eventually winning 1-0. Under 1.5 goals was backed at [7.0] following Darron Gibson's 24th minute opener.

Newcastle had traded at a low of [2.38] to defeat Villa but again couldn't score. It will be Championship football for the Toon Army in August.

Earlier in the season Villa were backed at [1.1] to win the league without the Big Four but have ended the season one place behind Everton, conquerors of Fulham today, in sixth.

Sunderland and Chelsea produced a goalfest at The Stadium of Light, with the Blues winning 3-2. That scoreline was backed at 200, while five goals or more backed at 55.
