Legendary Non-league manager draws on all his experience to tell us where the value is to be had in the correct score market for Non-League football
I'm really looking forward to the live game on Thursday, it will hopefully be a cracker. Two former football league clubs playing in one of the best stadiums in non league football should be capable of proving there is life outside of the Premiership and Coca Cola Leagues.
Torquay's goal scoring record this season has been very impressive, scoring twenty times during their seven games thus far on their travels. Home and away they have scored three goals on five occasions and have managed to score the magic "four goals or more" three times. I use the phrase "magic four" because it features in one of my favourite markets - the correct score. There is massive value to be had in that market and remember that any other score only needs one team to hit the "magic four" and you've won.
Many teams are guilty of stopping doing what gave them the lead in the first place once they have taken a lead away from home, and adopt different tactics. The mind set becomes more defensive and the game plan becomes a case of "let's protect what we have got." It is easy to then invite pressure from the opposition, allow them more of the ball and with that possession comes confidence. It is very difficult to keep attacking whilst leading away from home but of late Torquay have shown they can be relentless in their pursuit of goals.
Torquay have scored exactly three goals in more than a third of all the games they have played this season. With the odds currently available it is possible to back them to win
3-0, 3-1, and 3-2 and still achieve odds of 8/1 or better. That has to be a great value bet. It's not where I'll be investing though, I'll be looking for them (or indeed Oxford) to score the "magic four." Odds of around 11 are currently available in the correct score market for any other score and bearing in mind that Torquay have been involved in that scoreline in two of their last three away outings, I think that represents superb value.
There were eleven conference games played on Tuesday night and two of them finished with an any other score line. Statistically that is of course 5.5, compared to the 11 or greater that is virtually always available in the market. Even if it doesn't go our way on Thursday it is a market to keep an eye on during the course of the season.
