Manchester United captain Gary Neville will miss the FA Cup final after undergoing exploratory surgery on his injured ankle.
The England defender has not played since collapsing under a challenge from Bolton midfielder Gary Speed at Old Trafford in the Premiership on March 17.
Sir Alex Ferguson had hoped the 32-year-old would be fit enough to make a return to competitive football before the end of the domestic season but only last week was considered doubtful for Saturday's showpiece at Wembley.
"Gary Neville has undergone an exploratory operation on his right ankle and he will miss the FA Cup final," read a statement on the club's official website.
Despite the loss of Neville and Louis Saha to injury United are 2.8 favourites to lift the FA Cup, while Chelsea, who have a host of injury problems themselves are trading at 2.98.
The draw is available at 3.8.
