The Boz scours the 32 Final Qualifying FA Cup fixtures to find us a little known outsider to follow into the first round proper.
Which football team does the Pink Panther support? The clue is that they play Histon in this weekend's 4th Round FA Cup Qualifier and the answer of course is.....
" Dur-ham,Dur-ham,Dur-ham,Dur-ham,Dur-ham,Dur-ham,Dur-ham Dur-errr,Der di Diddle doo!!"
DURHAM CITY have been blowing away all before them (including another memorable 1-0 win at Halesowen in the midweek FA Trophy replay) in the run up to hosting Histon at the Hetton Centre in Saturday's historic fixture. It seems just yesterday that Histon were FA Cup minnow themselves and were knocking out Redditch United at the Valley Stadium. How they have risen up the pyramid since then to be now on the cusp of a place in the Football League. Why therefore can I even think of having them beaten by Unibond North pretenders from Cathedral City? I'll tell you for why. Lee Collins has a game plan that he put into operation in the last round at Bower Fold where Steve Burr's Stalybridge Celtic were simply melted under a stunning barrage of counter-attacking football.
That was Stalybridge Celtic 1 Durham City 6 in case you missed it and Collins has pulled another master stroke in getting Gavin Cogdon and Co wound up again for Saturday with a 10-0 win in the County Cup last midweek. Durham City have only played seven league games so far this season but they are beaten in none and at [5.0], they represent The Boz's star tip for an upset on Saturday.
Next best are Andy Carney's Nailers from BELPER TOWN. I went to Christchurch Meadow to watch what I thought would be a stroll in the park for Redditch in Round 2 and saw the mightily impressive Lee Stevenson and striker Ben Walker tear The Reds apart. A visit to Dave Pace's Bloods at Droylsden's Butchers Arms will be no harder for the Derbyshire side whose league position in Unibond South is very misleading. Like Durham, they have been too busy winning cup games to bother with playing any league fixtures! Belper's price is also around the [5.0] mark although I have seen some [5.5] and it would not be unwise to post longer in case the FA Cup banker boys are prepared to see Droylsden as one of the 'on paper unbeatables' that they like to mash up in their short price multiples.
EVESHAM UNITED play host to Garry Hill's borderline hooligans from Rushden & Diamonds. The Nene Park ninjas have seen red five times already this season and top the BSP bad boy list with 27 yellows in just 16 games. That's an average of 2 cards a game and is sample of the kind of ill discipline that referees are out to punish this season. I used to watch Evesham manager Paul West when he was captain at Morecambe and he has been doing a great job with the apple-growers from Worcestershire who are an ambitious club and have the honour of being the team that put Chasetown out of the competition this year. They are attractively priced at [4.5] and I consider them on my list of possibles if Hill is not able to get the Diamonds under the cosh and into some sort of manageable order.
My final possible shock comes as Ridgeons Premier League team LEISTON play host to BSP whipping boys Lewes. The pyramid has these two miles apart on paper but in truth, Lewes are not far from an Eastern Counties strength team with what they have fielded in the Conference this season whilst Carl Chenery has moulded a side in Suffolk that have scored 38 and conceded just 4 in nine league games so far. They have the capable Jamie Stannard keeping goal and none other than Titus Bramble's brother Tes - who was turning out for Stevenage last season - up front partnering the goal machine that is Judd Chenery. Lewes are priced at [1.53] away from home which is something you thought you wouldn't see this season whilst Leiston are another [5.0] shot that might well be on offer at longer around kick-off time..
That's four prime longshots from the Boz stable and it only needs one to win at level stakes to show a profit. The Romantic however sees good chances for all four if the wind is blowing in the right direction. This is the FA Cup after all!!
