Ex-West Ham defender makes shock move

Every now and then you find a piece of football news that no matter how dependable the source just seems too ridiculous to be true and reports of Calum Davenport's arrival at Wootton Blue Cross of the Hereward Teamwear United Counties League Division One fits that category.

The 27-year-old defender, who was last seen playing in the Premier League for West Ham and Sunderland and spent the summer on trial at first Nottingham Forest and then Leeds United, has officially joined the Bedfordshire-based tenth-tier club according to the league's official website.

The Coventry trainee, who cost the Irons £3 million before having his contract terminated earlier this year, isn't expected to stay at such a low level for a long time though, with the article confirming his signing claiming that he "is now seeking to regain fitness before returning to the professional ranks".

could be something to do with him being stabbed in the legs last year, aye?

Of course that's going to be hard to recover from Sean, but Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have both been willing to look at him this summer, so even if they weren't impressed, you would expect a League One/Two club to then ask him in for training.

Clearly Wootton Blue Cross appeals as a short-term option because of the location, however it's hard to see who will be keeping an eye on his progress there once he has recovered form and fitness to take him back into the Football League, whereas if he was at a level that receives more exposure it would be easier to climb back up the ladder.
