West Brom linked with World Cup keeper

West Brom goalkeeper and captain Scott Carson may be about to pay the price for a disappointing campaign, with Italian boss Roberto Di Matteo reportedly looking to bring in compatriot Federico Marchetti on loan from Cagliari until the end of the season.

The rumour, reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, suggests not only that Di Matteo has, like a vocal number of Baggies fans, run out of patience with the three-time England international but that he also lacks faith in reserve shot-stopper Boaz Myhill, who he signed from Hull in the summer.

Marchetti featured in all three of the matches in Italy's disastrous World Cup campaign, coming on for injured number one Gianluigi Buffon at half-time against Paraguay then starting against New Zealand and Slovakia.

The 27-year-old's stint between the sticks in South Africa will be remembered for the unfortunate statistic that he conceded four of the five shots he faced in those encounters and he hasn't had a chance to make amends since because Cagliari have frozen him out after he failed to complete a move away from Sardinia in pre-season.

His reputation remains relatively undiminished though and Arsene Wenger has admitted his admiration for the former Torino goalkeeper - some would suggest not perhaps the best sign given his recent track record - while West Brom were initially linked with him after the World Cup.

The development that he will be allowed to leave temporarily has come about after discussions were held between Cagliari president Massimo Cellino, who tried to buy West Ham this time last year, and Marchetti's agent Giuseppe Bozzo.

Would you like Marchetti to join, West Brom fans? Have your say below...
