The Great Premier League Transfer Race

Every Thursday this summer we've been updating our Premier League net spend table to reflect the transactions completed over the previous seven days, and now it's time to reveal the final results.

To the shock of absolutely nobody, Manchester City splashed the most cash, though they ducked back under the £100 million mark after selling Robinho to AC Milan for around £18 million.

One-time regular winners Chelsea ranked second after bringing in the likes of Ramires and Yossi Benayoun over the course of the window, while ambitious Tottenham and Birmingham leapfrogged Wolves after a busy deadline day, with Rafael van der Vaart joining Spurs and Jean Beausejour the most costly of three late signings by Alex McLeish.

Stoke's presence just below Birmingham and Wolves in sixth after adding Marc Wilson, Jermaine Pennant and Eidur Gudjohnsen to earlier captures Kenwyne Jones and Jon Walters suggests that Aston Villa face a tough challenge to remain the midlands finest, having only signed Stephen Ireland.

Sunderland made the most expensive Premier League purchase of the week by paying £13 million for Asamoah Gyan but alongside Liverpool and Aston Villa, they are one of three clubs to record a profit after selling Martyn Waghorn to Leicester for £3 million.
