Houllier backed in for the Aston Villa job
Gerard Houllier is now the [4.2] second favourite behind caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald ([2.42]) to take charge at Villa Park after reports that he held successful talks with the midland club's owner Randy Lerner.
The Frenchman, who managed Liverpool between 1998 and 2004, first emerged as a contender on Wednesday and his price has continued to move inwards since, especially after this morning's Daily Mail claims that he was set to be given a job, though potentially not as Martin O'Neill's replacement.
The article vaguely stated that "it is as yet unknown in what capacity the Frenchman will return", which perhaps indicates that Lerner is seriously considering appointing MacDonald but would like an experienced figure overseeing his progress.
The duo appear to be locked in a three-horse race for the position with Alan Curbishley ([7.2]) after long-term candidate Sven-Goran Eriksson drifted to [21.0] amidst suggestions that he had met with Villa officials and been officially ruled out of the running.
