Handicap betting is designed to even up a contest whether it's rugby, basketball or Australian Rules football. The handicap is designed to create a market where the price is generally assumed (and the same for both teams) but the start given varies.

A handicap is assigned to each team in a match. The aim of which is to even up a contest by giving the underdog goals or fractions of goals start.

Handicaps given are listed as either whole or half-goals, e.g. 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 goals. But there can't be half a goal you argue - that's exactly the point! It eliminates the draw.

Split Handicaps (also known as a Double Handicap)

The handicaps used are shown in multiples of 0.5 however this doesn't always lead to an even market because the value of one goal is so high. To combat this, a split (or double) handicap can be used.

Asian handicap betting should be explored as a betting medium, it has two important advantages. Traditionally betting on a football match odds is a three-way market with the draw as a third potential outcome. Betting using Asian handicaps reduces the number of possibilities to only two.
