Traders to get Newbury treat

Treat has done very little wrong in three Group One contests and can earn herself some more black type when stepping down in class in the feature race at Newbury (15:50).

Mick Channon's filly improved with every race last season, culminating in a fine second behind Simply Perfect in the Fillies' Mile at Ascot. Her fourth place finish in the 1000 Guineas reads perfectly well and on her latest start at the Curragh she finished the same distance beaten by the smart Finsceal Beo as at Newmarket.

With the 1000 Guineas run in a good time under the conditions, it is likely the daughter of Barathea will stay this extra two furlongs, however, it cannot be guaranteed and traders will need to factor this unknown into any price taken.

Jamie Spencer will certainly earn his fee on the filly given she needs plenty of encouragement from a long way out and it may be possible to pick up a better price in-play if certain layers sense there are others travelling better.

Set The Scene appears to be the main danger and there was plenty to like about the way John Gosden's filly easily beat a field of maidens at Brighton recently. Guaranteed to stay this trip, having won over 1m 4f, the main worry is the form of that contest was nothing special and she needs to improve plenty to be a danger to the likely favourite. Well supported that day, positive market vibes would suggest she could be capable of making a mark at this level, though on the balance of form a place finish might be the best her supporters can hope for.

It will be the market, once again, which should give the best indication of the chances of the Irish raider Thiella. The filly's latest defeat came at the hands of two promising Aidan O'Brien charges who both hold Group entries in the near future. It could be that her performance when finishing behind the pair recently at Navan is better than it first appears. She did not get the run of the race that day and could never land a blow against her rivals. If racing more prominently she may be seen to better effect.

Classic entry a clue to Circle

Circle of Love makes a belated seasonal reappearance in a competitive looking Newbury maiden (14:40) with the Irish Oaks entrant expected to be too good for some well-bred and race fit opponents.

Of good stock herself, the filly raced twice last season finishing third on her debut at Newmarket behind future listed race winner Sudoor in June and filling the same place behind Oaks winner Light Shift in September.

The daughter of Sahkee shaped well on both occasions and gave the impression a step up in trip would bring out the best in her. Her Oaks entry suggests the stable think plenty about her, and a dominant performance here will certainly encourage connections to run her in the July 15 contest.

There are plenty of dangers including two fillies from Barry Hills. Soul Mountain looks the pick of his runners having pleased many when running behind the useful Yaqueen on her debut in April. Expected to have improved since then, the main worry is perhaps why it has taken him so long to see a racetrack again. Market vibes may give the best indication to her well being.

Her stablemate Zifaaf has been brought on steadily and improved for a step up in trip last time out at Goodwood over 1m 1f. Doing her best work in the closing stages, she looks set to improve again and could give the likely favourite most to do, given her form and experience.

Fidelia has certainly got talent and has been far from outclassed on any of her starts. Her latest effort was spoilt by her being far too keen so perhaps it is to her credit that she finished as close as she did to Light Shift at Chester.

If settling better, the daughter of Singspiel looks to have a reasonable chance of at least making the frame but in-play traders will be quick to lay her if, once again, she starts pulling the arms off jockey Eddie Ahern.

Massa to buck losing trend

Although Buckie Massa is fairly well exposed, his good recent second at Brighton gives him every chance in the seven furlong handicap at Newbury (16:55).

With the stable of Sylvester Kirk slowly awakening from a quiet period, the gelded son of Best Of The Bests looks to have an excellent chance of adding to his sole racecourse victory at Wolverhampton in December. The three-year-old came through to win his race at Brighton at the furlong pole but was outpaced by the odds-on Gold Digger Miss close home.

With nothing in the field of that quality, Buckie Massa looks set to be popular among traders especially considering he relishes fast ground, is suited by the trip and will be in the hands of the useful apprentice William Buick.

Summer Dancer will no doubt be a popular choice hailing from the in-form David Elsworth yard and it was a useful effort the gelding put up last time in a big field Newmarket handicap.

He would have finished closer that day if getting more cover and can certainly improve on that run if things work out better for the three-year-old. The main worry could be the ground considering his better performances have come on a rain-softened surface and this will be the first time he has raced on ground as quick.

Another exposed type is Tipsy Prince but David Pinder's charge comes here on the back of a fair recent effort at Lingfield and should be challenging at the business end of the race if reproducing his best form. Very consistent, some may see him as an ideal candidate for a place but he is certainly more than capable of winning if things go his way.

Doyles Lodge is an interesting sort making his handicap debut. Two fair performances last season at Windsor were bettered this term with his best effort coming on his seasonal reappearance at Lingfield when he was a strongly finishing second behind Cherie's Dream. The three-year-old was well supported that day and expect positive market moves should connections feel he has been allocated a fair handicap mark.

Goose Green is turned out quickly after stumbling at the start of a race at Salisbury on Tuesday. Some of his form reads well in the context of this race and, if on song, could be a danger to all, though his overall record would suggest he may be more of a horse for place backers.
