The tournament started life as the Gillette Cup in 1963 and was the first limited overs competition in England. Initially the 17 first class counties competed in 65 overs a side games. The following year the rules were changed to 60 overs a game. The first five minor counties competed in the tournament from 1964.

In 1981 this cricket tournament was renamed the Natwest Trophy, the name it still carries today.
