Some early Statesside markers will be put down for the Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park on October 27 in Saturday night's Hollywood Gold Cup.
The front two in the market for the Grade 1 race at Hollywood Park this evening, Lava Man and the Brazilian-bred Molengao, are close in the Betfair ante-post market for the Classic, priced at 18.5 and 21 respectively - so something has to give.
The six-year-old Lava Man is a legend in California and is bidding to complete a hat-trick in the Hollywood Gold Cup, last achieved by Native Dancer between 1965 and 1967.
But plenty of race fans will be backing Molengao to overturn Santa Anita Handicap form with Lava Man, as he was fast catching the winner that day after getting behind in the slow early pace.
Street Sense is currently trading as the 5.6 favourite for October's BC Classic, ahead of Curlin at 6, Rags To Riches at 8.4 and Manduro at 11.
