Cricket has long been the chosen sport for many across England in the summer for many a year. You can't walk too far on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon without hearing the fimilar sound of leather on willow. However you can't in general bet on these games for for all domestic and international games you can bet to your hearts content on Betfair's cricket betting home page.
History of FanvFan
After the Ashes summer of 2005 - the 2009 version of the oldest rivalry in international cricket had long been circled on many a sporting fans' calendar. Betfair decided to get two popular ex-cricketers to get together go go through a series of challenges to see once and for all who is better - the England or the Aussies.
So up stepped Jason Gillespie for the visitors. With 259 wickets at the top level and 1,258 runs in 71 tests - the man they call 'Dizzy' had a strong pedigree. He probably wouldn't like to read this without someone mentioning that he scored an unbeaten double hundred in test cricket - so there you go Jason!
For the English it was the loveable rouge Phil Tufnell. Also a bowler 'Tuffers' took 121 wickets in test cricket but could only knock off 153 runs in his 42 appearances for England in the long form of the game.
If you take the cricket records into account you'd have to fancy the Australian to come over here and take out Tuffers in the Betfair Challenge. If you want to know who won then please watch the videos below:
Challenge 1 - Pedalo Race
As tension mounted in preparation for the Ashes, the Betfair rivals emerged from their trenches to fight... there was no holding back in Cardiff Bay when our rivals took to the water to battle it out, each with their nation's sporting pride on board!
Challenge 2 - Lawn Mower Race
Jeremy Clarkson eat your heart out - this was possibly our favourite of all our sporting challenges! Even our normally suave and sophisticated Betfair rivals couldn't fail to look totally ridiculous sitting on little lawn mowers, racing each other at top speed to the finish line in our heart-stopping Lawn Mower Grand Prix at Lords Cricket ground.
Challenge 3 - Horse Race
For this challenge we sent our Betfair rivals to Warwick Racecourse to see who would make it past the finishing post first. Just to even the odds and make things more interesting though, they wouldn't be on horseback - they'd be riding small Ponies instead!
Challenge 4 - Zorbing
Our lads travelled to the wilds of Leeds for this challenge, involving some incredibly tricky Zorbing (or 'Sphereing') and the biggest set of inflatable stumps the world has ever seen. No doubt about it, these were much bigger balls than either of our Betfair rivals were used to handling!
Challenge 5 - Cricket Match - The Final
It all came down to this six-a side extravaganza, which saw Tuffers-plus-five take on Gillespie's lot in a match where our two rivals each captained a side containing amongst others: a lucky Betfair customer, a member of their own country's media, and one of their cricketer mates.
The Forfeit
While Aussie tears flowed as England masterfully took control of the Ashes, we too were crying: Tears of laughter.
The Ending
So there we have it. England won on and off the pitch. It was an enjoyable summer for cricket fans and hopefully they enjoyed the Betfair Challenge on the way. A bit of fun on those days between test matches!
