The victory in Kingston was the hosts' second of the group stages and they join Australia in the next round.

West Indies won the toss and were set a target of 203 after putting Zimbabwe into bat but Chris Gayle (40) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (21) gave the side a good platform with an opening stand of 73.

Although Zimbabwe hit back to reduce the Windies to 129-4 in the 33rd over, Lara (44) and Dwayne Bravo (37) enjoyed an unbroken partnership of 75 to guide the side home with 13 balls to spare.

Lara, available at 4 to finish as the top WI batsman with 81 runs so far, believes the side needs to improve with the tough games coming up and insisted the players would not be resting on their laurels despite ensuring their progress.

"There is a lot of room for improvement," insisted Lara. "But, as long as we keep improving game by game, I'm pretty happy.

"The tough games are to come and the guys are going to go back to the drawing board and look at the areas we need to improve on and keep working on them."

West Indies play Ireland on Friday to determine who finishes top of Group D, although there is no doubt as to who punters fancy as the host nation are priced at 1.06, with Ireland available at 11.

Zimbabwe need to beat Pakistan in their final group match on Wednesday to give themselves a chance of edging out Ireland in qualification for the next phase. However, Inzamam-ul-Haq's men are strong 1.2 favourites to end their disastrous World Cup campaign with a win, with Zimbabwe on offer at 5.3.

West Indies can be supported at 9.2 to lift the trophy on April 28, with Australia favourites at 2.9, South Africa next best at 5.3 and Sri Lanka trading at 8.6.
