Hussey handed Aussie skipper role

Mike Hussey will captain Australia for their forthcoming one-day series in New Zealand, with Ricky Ponting ordered to rest a back problem.

Hussey has been handed the role ahead of regular vice-captain Adam Gilchrist, who has also been given a break ahead of the World Cup - which Australia are 2.6 favourites to win.

Ponting's back has troubled him throughout the last six months, but the Australian medical team have been quick to point out that there is no serious problem.
Team physio Alex Kountouris said: "While he is able to train and play, the injury causes him significant discomfort and we want to alleviate this before the start of what is a major tournament," said team physio Alex Kountouris.
"Through the correct medical management we are confident of Ricky competing pain-free in the West Indies."
Punters should be mindful of Australia's record without Ponting on the pitch, which makes interesting reading.

During his time as captain, he has played in 136 ODI's - with the Green and Golds winning 105 and losing 23.

In that same period of time, Australia has played 12 matches against Test playing nations without Ponting - winning seven and losing five.
