England are still in with a chance of reaching the Commonwealth Bank Series final after Australia beat New Zealand by five wickets.

It means a victory for England against the Kiwis on Tuesday will see them go through to the best-of-three one-day games final against the hosts.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first in Melbourne with skipper Stephen Fleming caught by Mike Hussey off the bowling of Brett Lee for just nine.

However Lou Vincent hit 90 in a 151-run stand with Peter Fulton to help them set up an imposing total of 290-7.

Australia responded well to the challenge as skipper Ricky Ponting returned to the fold with 104 to lead his side to within 25 runs of victory.

And, despite Hussey getting run out, the Aussies were guided home by Cameron White and Brad Hodge, who finished one run short of securing his maiden one-day international century.

England are now trading at 2.6 to make the final with New Zealand still 1.51 favourites to face Australia.

Australia are 1.15 to win the tournament with New Zealand and England trading at 12 and 15.5 respectively.
