SportsAid - Betfair's Charity of the Year 2008

SportsAid is the charity for sports people, helping the next generation of young British sportsmen and women to succeed

SportsAid is the first organisation that says "Yes" to a talented young athlete. It offers help at the start of the journey, when, more often than not, mum and dad are the solitary sponsor. At that stage, independent recognition and financial assistance makes a huge difference.

Betfair is passionate about sport and is committed to supporting emerging British sporting talent. The partnership with SportsAid is the best way of ensuring that the money goes where it is most needed.

In 2007 Betfair and SportsAid worked together to raise over a quarter of a million pounds, thorough the sponsorship of the National Lunch Club series, the new SportsAid quiz and numerous other events. Betfair then matched this total with a cheque presentation for £125,000.

2008 is set to be another exciting year for the two organisations. During the year Betfair will continue its role as the official 'Development Partner of University Team GB'. Team GBR is the international student team which represents Great Britain at the World University Summer & Winter Games every two years and at individual sport University World Championships in the alternate years. Many of the athletes competing in these competitions will go on to compete at future Olympic Games, as the likes of Steve Backley, James Cracknell and Beth Tweedle have done in the past. The team is managed and run by British University Sports Association (BUSA) and is populated by an increasing proportion of athletes from the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), administered by SportsAid.
