The big question - when should you split pairs?
In our first ever BBS tips article (November 06) we offered 2 tips on splitting pairs: Never split 10's, and always split Aces. Now we have 2 more tips on when and when not to split...
a) Never split 5's: Any blackjack player knows that a ten is a much better total to hold than a five. Considering that over 54% of the deck consists of the cards 8 through to Ace, when holding a ten, you have a reasonable chance of hitting a card which will give you a good hand total between 18 and 21. This is not the case when holding two 5's.
b) Always split 8's: If we apply the same logic as above we get the inverse conclusion here. An 8 is a much better hand to hold than a 16.
