Martin Gould - Crucible comeback king?
"My advice is to lay Fu at [1.17], then place an order to close the bet for a guaranteed profit should the Hong Kong star drift out to [1.6] at any stage."
Martin Gould is an improved player and he could be set to shock Marco Fu at the Crucible, says Paul Krishnamurty.
Martin Gould was involved in a couple of turnarounds last year at the Crucible, so despite a disappointing opening session against Marco Fu, he should be well aware of the remaining possibilities from 6-3 down. Indeed, he can summon plenty of confidence from the fact that he trailed Fu by a similar margin at the exact same stage before winning 10-9.
Doubtless Gould would rather forget what happened in the next round, when Neil Robertson denied him a quarter-final place by reeling off eight of the last nine frames to overturn an 11-5 deficit. Nevertheless, it was encouraging to hear Gould saying last week he much he learned from that experience, and he certainly looks an improved player this term. A run to the final of last month's PCT, where he lost to Shaun Murphy, was arguably his best achievement to date and confirms solid recent form. At 21st in the provisional rankings, he still retains faint hopes of joining the elite top-16 for next season.
We've already seen how quickly a 6-3 first session lead can evaporate, with both the Hendry/Perry and Hawkins/Maguire matches going to deciders on Monday. Granted, the chaser eventually lost both matches, but still rewarded many in-running traders by assuming odds-on favouritism in-running. With Fu trading at an extremely prohibitive [1.17] with a lot of snooker left in this match, this strikes me as a similar opportunity.
My advice is to lay Fu at [1.17], then place an order to close the bet for a guaranteed profit should the Hong Kong star drift out to [1.6] at any stage.
