Ronnie matched at [1.01] to score the Crucible's biggest score - but Carter's 147 scuppers the money buyers
Never over-react and always be aware of the settlement rules of the market you are betting on - these are two basic rules of punting.
But when Ronnie O'Sullivan potted the final black of his stunning 147 on Monday, these were ignored.
Punters fell over themselves to back O'Sullivan at any price on Betfair to be the player to score the highest break of the Crucible fortnight, with over £18k matched on him at the minimum price of [1.01].
However, if they had taken a minute to organize their thoughts, they possibly wouldn't have struck the bet, because dead-heat rules obviously would apply on the market if another player scored a maximum.
And their worst fears - but the [1.01] layers' dream scenario - were confirmed when Ali Carter notched up another 147 in his quarter-final against Peter Ebdon last night.
