The multiple winner and the winner in waiting, O'Sullivan and Ding are the men to be with
"The early signs, in my view, are that Ding and O’Sullivan will take their place in the last four, so now could be as good a time as any to start picking the tournament winner with a view to trading out when the either player reaches the semi or the final."
So far the focus has been on picking the best bets from the individual matches, but there's a tournament to be won when all is said and done. With the quarter-finals well under way, there are two outstanding candidates, says Alex Lee.
Ability-wise, the width of a cigarette paper separates the contestants in the Ding/Selby, O'Sullivan/Higgins World Championship quarter-finals matches. While the latter pair are locked at 4-4, the score in the other 'clash of the inseperables'sees Ding holding a 5-3 lead.
The early signs, in my view, are that Ding and O'Sullivan will take their place in the last four, so now could be as good a time as any to start picking the tournament winner with a view to trading out when the either player reaches the semi or the final.
In reaching the last eight, Ding Junhui seems to have exorcised any Crucible demons he may have had and despite him being up against a free-scoring Mark Selby right now, the Chinese player is currently the value bet of the tournament. If he gets past Selby, (who is the tournament's joint-favourite at [5.4] based on his demolition job of Stephen Hendry) he'll fancy his chances of going all the way.
With the winner of the O'Sullivan/Higgins tie equally tough to predict, the smart money has to be on a resurgent O'Sullivan, who represents better value at [5.7].
The two winners of the above mentioned quarters will not face each other in the semis, so dutch the pair to win the tournament as soon as you read this.
Recommended Bet:
Dutch O'Sullivan @ [5.7] and Ding @ [8.6] for the title with a view to trading out later in the tournament
