The Champ in action
"St Pierre is the best int he business at what he does and mixes his skills up better than anyone in the history of UFC."
Lionel Galea looks forward to another intriguing bout of UFC as plucky Jake Shields aims to cause an upset by beating the current champion into submission.
George "Rush" St. Pierre v Jake "Mr. Shields" Shields
Canadian George St. Pierre [1.29] looks to defend his title for the sixth consecutive time in front of his home crowd. His most recent defence, against Josh Koscheck, gave us a clearer insight into the lengths this champion is prepared to go to in order to retain his belt. He once claimed that "the the country or civilization with the most advanced weapons win the war" and proved this by dismantling his opponent with the most effective jab work ever seen in MMA.
For this camp, he's rolled with a plethora of black belts to improve his ground game, sharpened his boxing skills with Manny Pacquiao's legendary trainer Freddy Roach and developed his gymnastics. Couple this with the statement made earlier this week by long time head trainer Firas Zahabi that George will walk into the ring at 192lbs, regaining an incredible 22lbs within 24 hours. With this in mind, it's easy to rule out any opposition St. Pierre faces.
Jake Shields [4.1] is a self-proclaimed AJJ (American Jiu Jitsu) fighter who has passed under the radar of most fans. But his wins have been impressive in that most have come at the expense of respected fighters. To say this talent has a puncher's chance would be an understatement. His record has been molded by way of submission and his style is relentless.
Ruling out a fighter is not my style; upsets can occur as quickly as flash knockouts. GSP learned this the hard way when he stood against Matt Serra for the first time. However, the safer bet is on GSP, simply because he is the best at what he does, and mixes his skills up better than anyone in history of UFC. If you love an upset, Shields to win via submission is the second most likely outcome of this fight.
