With a race win record in his sights Sebastian Vettel faltered letting Lewis Hamilton take the victory

Sebastian Vettel retired on the first lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to ruin his chances of breaking Michael Schumacher's record for race wins in a season. Victory in the Middle East would have equalled his fellow countryman's 13 victories - setting Vettel up for a record-breaking 14th at the Brazilian GP on November 27.

But it was not to be, with Red Bull's German driver suffering a puncture, and it was left to McLaren's Lewis Hamilton to take the 25-point victory haul.

Hamilton was backed at an in-play high of [7.4] on Betfair to take the win with Vettel, who started on pole, backed at a low of [1.52].

The major honours in F1 are all sewn up now and the betting interest is left to the 'winner without Vettel' market. After a strong second half of the season McLaren's Jenson Button heads the field there and can be backed at [1.27] to finish the season in second place in the standings.

But he's being chased all the way by Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who finished one place above Button in second today, and sits just 10 points behind his rival in the table. Alonso trades as the [4.3] outsider in what is essentially a two horse race with Mark Webber holding a very slim chance of stealing second place.
