Phil Taylor remains untouchable at the pinnacle of the darting profession. Raymond van Barneveld's heartfelt, if not slightly strange speech after the conclusion of the Las Vegas Desert Classic highlighted the somewhat invincible aura he possesses over his contemporaries.

Robert Thornton will be his first hurdle in Blackpool as The Power bids to claim a 10th World Matchplay title, but the Scot will not succumb without a fight. As well as being a top quality player and having a commitment to practicing and improving emulated by few, Thornton possess a dogged temperament which has seen him move into the PDC's top 20 since his arrival in May 2008.

I don't foresee Taylor making an early exit here but Thornton will hang on to his coat tail all the way.
