With only five weeks of the Premier League group stages remaining we're down to the business end of proceedings. Jaymes Monte picks out his best bet from Sheffield...

In the past week I've finally got round to reading Dave Farrar's The Perfect Punter. For those of you who aren't aware of the book it is, basically, the story of one man's quest to become, you guessed it, 'the perfect punter'. At the centre of this pursuit is an attempt to determine and evaluate variables that can have an effect on the outcome of an event, that are not made obvious by more commonly-used statistical analysis.

Having not read the book prior to last week's preview in which I suggested backing Simon Whitlock to beat Gary Anderson, Farrar's ideals have struck a few chords over the past couple of days. Statistical analysis is all well and good, and certainly shouldn't be discarded, but it is 'outside' factors that will ultimately give the punter the edge.

I wasn't in any way comfortable with the circumstances that led to me opposing Anderson last week. But such is the competitiveness of this year's Premier League, a lack of practice will leave any player, Phil Taylor included, caught short.

The Scot has two games this week and it is the first of the night, against James Wade, which attracts my attention. Wade was, somewhat uncharacteristically, rattled by Adrian Lewis in his match last week; Jackpot coming through as the 8-5 winner after some unsavoury mid-match debates between Lewis, Wade and the match referee.

Despite that defeat I believe that The Machine will have too much for a yet-to-get-up-to-speed Anderson. It may be that the first match serves as a useful loosener that will see him go on to beat Andy Hamilton later in the evening, but we'll take him on in the opener with a back of Wade at odds of [2.3].

Recommended Bet:
Back Wade to beat Anderson @ [2.3]
