Whitlock has the fortitude to bounce back from last week's humiliation.
"For some players the humiliation of a whitewash would signify the start of a downward spiral."
Having watched Simon Whitlock lose in spectacular fashion last week, Jaymes Monte expects the Aussie to come out fighting in Nottingham...
Simon Whiltock suffered the ignominy of becoming only the third player in Premier League history to be whitewashed when losing 8-0 to James Wade last week. An opportunity to bounce back immediately is presented with this week's match against defending champion Gary Anderson.
Some whitewashes in darts, or any sport for that matter, can be anticipated to a certain degree. Certainly when Phil Taylor takes to the stage in his current inimitable form there is always the chance of a landslide victory for The Power. But Wade's triumph over Whitlock was completely out of the blue, with both players going into the match in good form.
Even in the early stages of the match it didn't appear that the Aussie would succumb so tamely, the Wizard hitting 180s in each of the two opening legs. But as the match progressed, Wade dragging Whitlock around the stage by his braided ponytail, the previously unlikely became increasingly inevitable.
For some players the humiliation of a whitewash would signify the start of a downward spiral. Whitlock does not fall into that category. He's the determined sort and, as he told www.pdc.tv, has been practising hard over the past seven days to put things right.
Conversely, it is, understandably, unlikely that Anderson has had much spare time to spend practising in recent weeks. Although his raw talent means that the Scot can still produce some quality darts without spending too many hours working on his game, he is far less consistent following prolonged periods out of action.
Whitlock had more than enough to beat Anderson in front of a partisan Scottish crowd in Glasgow a few weeks ago, at a time when Anderson's game was coming together. Under the circumstances ahead of this week's match the [2.4] on Whitlock to complete the double is a very good value bet.
