Hatton v Mayweather proves to be the biggest boxing betting event ever
The late and relentless Betfair gamble on Floyd Mayweather to beat Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas this morning - he was backed from [1.66] into [1.44] at the start of the fight on Betfair, with the Hitman available at [3.5] - proved spot on as the American won by a 10th round stoppage.
Other bookmakers were reporting that up to 90 per cent of bets in the run-up to the fight were for Hatton, at odds as low as [2.5].
But that was not mirrored on Betfair, as Hatton drifted from [2.74] to [3.5] on the betting exchange. And Mayweather went on to show his class with a 10th round stoppage, available at [60.0] on Betfair.
Nearly £12m was traded in the outright market alone - with seven-figure sums also matched on the accompanying lines - making it the biggest boxing betting contest in history.
